Seahawks - Titans Recap

The Seattle Seahawks only have one Super Bowl appearance in their history, and the quarterback who led them there was Matt Hasselbeck. Today though, Hasselbeck is a member of the Tennessee Titans, but was welcomed back with a long and loud cheer by Seahawks fans when he stepped on the field Saturday to take on his former team in the first preseason game for both teams.

Robert Turbin
Those cheers of support immediately turned to cheers of success for the Seahawks. On Hasselbecks first play, his throw to wide receiver Nate Washington was dropped, but as Washington fell down, the ball stayed on his body. It was picked up by corner Brandon Browner, who took it back to the house to put Seattle up 7-0 after only 9 seconds had ticked off the clock.

As the first quarter went on, it was Seattle’s offenses turn. Led by newly signed QB Matt Flynn, fans were anxious to see what the announced starter could do. But Seattle started by running the ball, both to Leon Washington and rookie Robert Turbin. Washington started, with three straight big runs. Turbin then came in and ran all over this Titans defense that was struggling to take him down. Flynn started to get some passes in as well, and after a very long drive, Seattle kicker Steven Hauschka hit a 41 yard field goal. Seattle was up 10-0.

Flynn was 6/6 for 36-yards on his first and only drive of the first quarter.

Hasselbeck came back onto the field for the start of the second, and hit his first three passes, all for first downs. On his fourth throw, he made a crucial mistake lobbing the ball up to a double covered receiver. 2nd year pro Richard Sherman out of Stanford made the pick and stepped out on the Titans 5 yard line.

Matt Flynn was off to another hot start, hitting TE Zach Miller with a 9 yard pass, then a 14 yard pass to Miller again. Next play though, Flynn made a very poor pass that was picked by Titans Colin McCarthy.

Hasselbecks day was done, and Jake Locker came in. Locker was a star at University of Washington, and went to Ferndale High School in northern Washington State. Seahawks fans had another QB to welcome back, and they gave him another huge standing ovation. Locker did not do much on his first drive, but on his second moved the ball with quick clean passes.  Tennessee kicker Rob Bironas hit a field goal as they headed to half, 10-3 Seahawks.

Seattle did make a QB change in the second half, bringing in rookie Russell Wilson. And Wilson took advantage of this opportunity, surprising many with his play. Wilson was completing passes all over the field. The offensive line was letting the d-line get through and get to Wilson, but he was able to scramble away each time. It was capped off by a 39-yard TD pass to Braylon Edwards that had the whole stadium rocking.

Former Florida Atlantic standout Rusty Smith started at quarterback for the Titans in the 2nd half. Smith looked very poised in the pocket and for the most part played very well. Seattle was stuffing the run but was giving up a lot of completions. However, Titan's running back Darius Reynaud did break a 21 yard touchdown run in the 3rd quarter.

But Reynaud was not done, and kept on impressing. At the end of the 3rd, he was able to return a punt 85-yards for a touchdown. That tied the game up at 17-17 going into the fourth.

Wilson did make one terrible decision to start the fourth quarter though. After Heath Farwell picked up a fumble that put the Seahawks on the Titan's twelve, Wilson tried to lob a pass into triple coverage and it was easily picked off by Zac Diles. But it was not enough for the Titans, and the Seahawks were able to get a field goal on the next drive to go up 20-17. Tennessee kicker Will Batson had a chip shot FG to tie it with 4 minutes left but missed. That all but put the game out of reach. Wilson added a huge 32 yard TD run, only solidifying his huge night. And from there, Seattle rolled 27-17.

Seattle and Tennessee both played similar tonight. The offenses looked good passing the ball, but at times the run game had issues. Chris Johnson had only 8-yards on 5 carries, and Robert Turbin had 24-yards on 10 carries. But both passing attacks were very fluent.  Russell Wilson was 12/16 124-yards 1 TD 1 INT with 3 carries for 59-yards and a touchdown. Matt Flynn was 11/13 with 71-yards and a pick. One thing that stood out was how much Seattle seemed to be throwing to its running backs a lot. Seattle’s backfield had 10 receptions while the receivers had 13. But short passes were the key, as Seattle only averaged 6.4 yards per pass and Tennessee averaged 5.9.

Titans QBs Locker and Smith did well. Locker was 7/13 for 80-yards and Rusty Smith was 7/10 for 76-yards.

All quarterbacks had a high completion percentage, and both defenses struggled defending the pass. But they limited each other to respectable amount of yardage. Seattle had 321, Tennessee had 305.

For Seattle, Tarvaris Jackson and Josh Portis did not play. Both will most likely play in the week 2 game at Denver. Flynn played well enough to keep the starting job, but it will be interesting to see what Wilson can keep doing. He played exceptionally well and like all rookie QBs will have flashes of greatness at times. Hopefully it can be a sign of things to come. Terrell Owens did not play, but was visible at all times on the sideline. Both he and Braylon Edwards could be in a battle to stay on the team past the preseason, and with Edwards impressive touchdown grab, Owens needs to get on the field quick. Marshawn Lynch did not play much, with only one carry for no yards. Robert Turbin did a great job playing as a receiving back and if Lynch is playing in the regular season, we could see Turbin used as a short yardage dump off option. Heavily criticized first round pick Bruce Irvin did not register a single stat in his first game as a Seahawk. Doug Baldwin, Ricardo Lockette, and Sidney Rice also did not play.

For Tennessee, all quarterbacks played for the Titans. Hasselbeck did struggle, only adding fuel to the fire of letting Locker start. Locker had a very decent game, and third string Rusty Smith did as well. But with Hasselbeck and Locker ahead of him Smith will not be higher than #3. Chris Johnson had a tough time running the ball, but Javon Ringer was able to pick up 22-yards on only 4 carries. The MVP of the game for Tennessee goes to Darius Reynard. Reynard was an UFA in 2008 out of West Virginia. After spending time with the Vikings and Giants, he signed with Tennessee this off-season. He has never registered a single reception but has returned many kicks. But with his performance tonight he should not have much left to lock up a roster spot. While he is listed as a receiver, he played running back, finishing with 29-yards on only five carries (good for a pre-season game) and added a touchdown. He also had the 85-yard punt return for a touchdown. Titans first round pick Kendall Wright had 3 receptions for 47 yards. Nate Washington, fresh off a 1,023-yard season, had 3 receptions for 24-yards.  G Steve Hutchinson also returned to Seattle for the first time with Tennessee.

65,589 people were in attendance for tonights game.

Terrell Owens Signs With Seahawks

T.O is back in the NFL, this time with the Seattle Seahawks. Terrell Owens signed a one year deal with the Seahawks on Monday after a workout.

Owens

The 38-year old WR is 2nd all time in receiving yards to Jerry Rice, 6th all time in receptions, and also the only player in history to score a touchdown vs all 32 NFL teams.

But he did not play last year, after a knee surgery, and has had a long road back along with embarrassment. Owens hosted an open workout earlier this year with an invitation to all teams. Not one team showed up. But he is now a member of the Seahawks, and the future Hall of Famer's sixth team will be Seattle.

Owens started his career in San Francisco, and he played there for seven years. He spent two years with the Eagles, including a trip to the Super Bowl. Dallas was his next home, then Buffalo and Cincinnati for the next two years.

But what overshadows Owens so much is the controversy that comes with him. He doesn't get in trouble with the law, but numerous times has been in the news for infamous things. With the 49ers, Owens had many touchdown dances, including one vs his new team, Seattle, where he pulled a sharpie out of his sock and signed the ball after a touchdown.

His time in Philadelphia brought the most controversy. In 2004 he stated on a radio show that if he could do the 2004 season over, he would have not signed with the Eagles. He referred to the Eagles as a classless organization, and trashed his quarterback Donovan McNabb, saying if Brett Favre was the starting quarterback, this team would be undefeated. In 2004 he appeared in a sexually suggestive skit for Desperate Housewives before a MNF game. In 2006, he tried to kill himself with pain killers, though he denies this. In a game vs the Falcons, he spit on DeAngelo Hall's face. While with the Cowboys, he cried during an interview in which he responded to the criticism on quarterback Tony Romo. Though he also would publicly trash Romo for not throwing him the ball.

The list goes on and on. But all Owens did bring is media attention to your team, as well as a very good receiver. At this point in his career, it is unclear just how well he will do in Seattle. He will bring the media attention, and could possibly bring a decent WR. But, the team already has a very young receiving corps.

The oldest receiver is recently signed Braylon Edwards, who is 29. Sidney Rice (25), Ben Obamanu (28), Ricardo Lockette (26), Golden Tate (24), Kris Durham (24), Deon Butler (26), and UFA sophomore star Doug Baldwin (23) are the returning receivers. The team also added receiving TE Kellen Winslow Jr in a trade with Tampa Bay this off-season. This team appears to be adding as many weapons as possible for presumed starter Matt Flynn.

But could adding two veteran receivers who have not performed at an elite level in recent years a good move? Probably not. Braylon Edwards was the third pick by the Browns in 2005. He has been nothing but a bust. Only one season, in 2007, did Edwards post numbers a top 3 WR should put up (80 rec, 1,289 yds, 16 tds). But he was shipped to the Jets in 2009 and didn't do much better there. He played in 9 games for the 49ers last year before being waived mid season. Not to mention he has not been an angel off the field either.

When Owens last played for Cincinnati in 2010, he had a very good season with 72 receptions for 983 yards and 9 touchdowns. But it has been a whole year.

Overall, one veteran receiver is okay to add right now for Seattle. Rice has had more then enough injuries, and this unit is still young. Obamanu has been reliable, Lockette showed good signs last season, and if Baldwin can avoid a sophomore slump he will be big. Tate could be poised for a breakout year, Butler will try to get back to his old self before a tragic knee injury in 2010, and Durham should see more time this year.

The addition of a veteran who will demand playing time could stunt the growth of these receivers. And some of them really need a year to get back on track (IE: Tate, Butler). In my opinion, either Owens or Edwards needs to be cut after the pre-season, because all you are doing is log jamming this position and I don't see it ending well. Either one is okay, but not both.

I think Owens will end up sticking around, and I believe he will be less of a distraction this year and make this team. And I think he is the better option over Edwards.

Seattle's receiver chart should look like this:
  1. Sidney Rice
  2. Terrell Owens/Braylon Edwards
  3. Doug Baldwin
  4. Ben Obamanu
  5. Deon Butler
  6. Golden Tate/Lockette/Durham
And that just shows how hard this is bringing in Owens and/or Edwards. All those players have a case to be #2. And letting them grow on the field seems like a better idea then letting them sit behind Owens.

This could end a number of ways for Seattle, but the chance it ends badly isn't a small percentage. The risk may outweigh the reward. This is Terrell Owens, after all.

2012 NFL Mock Draft 1.0

I really have not made a post in along time. Much has happened since my last one, including NFL playoffs, college football bowls, and NBA season well under way. But now is the time for NFL mock draft's, and here is my first one of the season.
* indicates a tie; coin toss at NFL Combine will determine winner.

1. Indianapolis Colts - Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford

Andrew Luck
This pick is pretty much a given, as the Colts even have announced that they will most likely take Luck. Overall  I think he is better then Robert Griffin, and has a good chance to be one of the next elite QB's within the next few seasons, something many recent first round QB's, such as Sam Bradford, Mathew Stafford, and Matt Ryan have not been able to do.
I also have said though, that when all the spotlight was on Luck early in the season, before RG3 took over, that expectations may be too high on him, and even if he does develop into a strong QB, people still will say he is a bust. This very well could still be true.
In the end, Luck is the best QB in this draft and still one of the best in recent drafts. Whether the Colts hold on to Manning or not, they will take Luck. No question.

2. St. Louis Rams - Matt Kalil, OT, USC

There is a serious chance here that the Rams could end up trading down, as the Redskins, Browns, and Dolphins, among others, could contact them about a trade. However if the Rams do stay here, they most likely have two players in mind.
Matt Kalil
First is Matt Kalil, a big 6'7 295 pound player, who is best tackle prospect since Jake Long. While he could use some weight, he has the strength and certainly the arm length to be a force against any team. Comparable to players such as Jonathan Ogden, Walter Jones, or Gary Zimmerman.
The other is Justin Blackmon, the WR from Oklahoma State, that you can read more about in the next pick. Kalil has the greater potential and less chance of being a bust, and the Rams have had plenty of busts in recent years. Kalil can fill what Jason Smith could not and is the smart pick here.

3. Minnesota Vikings - Justin Blackmon, WR, Oklahoma State

Minnesota's biggest need here is a cornerback, but they also need a WR just as badly, and a new weapon for Christian Ponder that he did not have last season. Blackmon is a 6'1 WR who is 215. Blackmon clearly was the best WR in college, recording 121 receptions with 1,522 yards and 18 TD's, with 186 yards and 3 TDs in the Fiesta Bowl.
Blackmon is not very fast and is not a deep threat receiver. But he makes catches and scores.
While his eye-popping numbers in college stand out, Blackmon may struggle in the NFL, but he also has great potential to become a star. Worth the risk by the Vikings.

4. Cleveland Browns - Robert Griffin III, QB, Baylor

If Cleveland does not move up in the draft, and RG3 is still available, this also is a no brainier. Griffin is a lot like Cam Newton, with a strong arm. While not a West Coast offensive QB, Griffin can still excel in Cleveland. The Browns do have Colt McCoy, but RG3 is just too good of a player to pass up on.
A no brainier pick right here, and while a team may trade up with Vikings or Rams to take him earlier, RG3 will not fall past the fourth pick.

5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Trent Richardson, RB, Alabama

Trent Richardson
A very tough call here between Richardson or CB Morris Claiborne from LSU. In the end, they go for style here and take Richardson. While they have LeGarrette Blount, Richardson is an upgrade and can help a running game that struggled last season. A corner can wait for later. Free Agent corners also include Brandon Carr, Cortland Finnegan, Carlos Rogers, & Tracy Porter. Buccaneers are more likely to take Richardson here.

6. Washington Redskins - Riley Reiff, OT, Iowa

If the Redskins are unsuccessful at selecting RG3, then a number of players could be taken here. Peyton Manning or Matt Flynn most likely will be brought in so helping offense rather then defense is what Mike Shanahan will do. Jammal Brown is a UFA and always injured. If Justin Blackmon is taken, Reiff is smarter choice. Reiff is a big kid who may move to guard at some point, but will most likely be a smart pick and have a solid career.

7. Jacksonville Jaguars - Kendall Wright, WR, Baylor

While this pick is a reach, the Jaguars are desperate for a WR. If QB Blaine Gabbert does not have any upgraded targets this season, the Jags will have a top 5 pick in 2013. Alshon Jeffery is an option here, but Wright is more likely. Besides, the Jaguars have not hesitated to reach for guys before (Tyson Alualu).

*8. Miami Dolphins - Quinton Coples, DE, North Carolina

Miami will be switching to a 4-3, and Coples is a great 4-3 player and too good to pass up on here. A great pass rusher at 6'6. An upgrade here and will be a good value pick if Miami stays at this spot. Morris Claiborne also an option here.

*9. Carolina Panthers - Michael Brockers, DT, LSU
Michael Brockers

Carolina really needs help on the defensive front as they were 25th in rushing yards allowed last season. Brockers is best player available here for DTs, and can make an impact from day one. Smart pick here by Carolina.

10. Buffalo Bills - Morris Claiborne, CB, LSU

The Bills have hesitated on drafting corners. But grabbing a new, talented one would be smart. They have had FA corner Stanford Routt visit Buffalo, but drafting Claiborne if he is available would be too smart to miss. Claiborne is a great player who has potential to be a shutdown corner. Bills should not pass on this kid. But we have seem them make plenty of bad decisions before.

*11. Kansas City Chiefs - Courtney Upshaw, LB, Alabama

The Chiefs can use help at LB, and Upshaw is best available. Very athletic player who can rack up the sacks. Luke Kuechly also a strong possibility here.

*12 Seattle Seahawks - Melvin Ingram, DE, South Carolina

Melvin Ingram
Seattle was hurting in pass rush last season, and while run stoppage is not an issue, pass rushing clearly is. If Ingram falls to this spot, Seattle cannot pass him up. Though Pete Carroll also could take one of his former defensive ends, Nick Perry, at this spot too.
QB and CB also could be taken here, but none are worth being taken this high. Ingram makes most sense.

13. Arizona Cardinals - David DeCastro, OG, Stanford

Guards usually are not taken this high, but DeCastro is a rare talent at the guard position. The Cardinals simply need to bolster the offensive line to protect whichever QB will be under center for them, more than likely Kevin Kolb.
If a tackle is taken, DeCastro's teammate Jonathan Martin, or Ohio State's Mike Adams are options. But DeCastro is best pick here.

14. Dallas Cowboys - Dre Kirkpatrick, CB, Alabama

Dallas's passing game was beaten many times last season, so help is a must at safety or corner. Kirkpatrick is best player available, and makes most sense. Kirkpatrick has not proven he can run downfield with wideouts, but he has great size and could become a Pro Bowler.

15. Philadelphia Eagles - Luke Kuechly, LB, Boston College

Luke Kuechly
Andy Reid doesn't draft linebackers in round one usually, but with how bad the Eagles defense was last year, and with how good Kuechly is, Reid may not have a choice. If Eagles do not make playoffs after such high expectations last preseason, Reid will be gone at season end.

16. New York Jets - Chandler Jones, DE, Syracuse

New York's defense is losing its pass rushing ability, and while Muhammad Wilkerson had a solid rookie campaign, they still need more. Jones can attack the opposing QB and on top of that stop the run. Adding some weight would help his play. Many other possible options here, but Jones is pick for now.

17. Cincinnati Bengals - Janoris Jenkins, CB, North Alabama

Jenkins was originally at Florida, but was kicked out of school and enrolled at North Alabama. He has seemed to turn his life around, and can be a great player despite coming from a small school last season. The Bengals can use the depth at corner and Jenkins can fill that.
Safety Mark Barron also should be considered here.

18. San Diego Chargers - Alshon Jeffery, WR, South Carolina

Vincent Jackson may or may not be back for the 'Bolts, and Jeffery is a hit or miss player. A top 5 pick at seasons start, Jeffery had a poor year and dropped even to round two in some drafts. But the potential is off the charts and someone in round one will take a chance on him. Whether that is the Chargers here or a team later on.
The Chargers also could select Michael Floyd or Kendell Wright if available. If they do not go after a WR round one, then Jonathan Martin or Mike Adams, both tackles, are likely here too.

19. Chicago Bears - Jonathan Martin, OT, Stanford

The Bears spent their first round pick last year on a tackle,Gabe Carimi. But they still need help and Martin, who could easily go in the top 10, would be a great pick up for Chicago. A wide receiver here also makes sense, or even another pass rushed to compliment Julius Peppers for a couple of more seasons.

20. Tennessee Titans - Mike Adams, OT, Ohio State

Many blame Chris Johnson, by himself, for his very disappointing season. But even coach Mike Munchak blamed the offensive line. Mike Adams is best player here. He has potential to be a solid anchor on either side of the line, and can help Johnson get back to his old form.
Pass rush is also something the Titans will address in draft, and could be upgraded at this spot.

21. Cincinnati Bengals - Cordy Glenn, OG, Georgia

With the Bengals' second first round pick, they will upgrade the offensive line with Cordy Glenn, a big 6'6, 346 pound guard who can play tackle but will be used at guard in the NFL. Should be a second round pick, but will be taken higher as Bengals do not want to make more of a reach for a running back. Glenn still can develop into a strong talent.

22. Cleveland Browns - Michael Floyd, WR, Notre Dame

The Browns will either go for a WR or offensive lineman here, assuming they keep this pick. If they are to trade up in top 5, this pick most likely will be involved in the deal. But if they stay, Floyd will be the pick. No offensive linemen left are worthy of being drafted so high, and RG3 can still have a target if he falls to Cleveland.
Greg Little had an up and down rookie season but even with Little, the Browns need another WR. Floyd is a great option and could end up being best receiver to come out of this draft.

23. Detroit Lions - Nick Perry, DE, USC
Nick Perry

Detroit's biggest need is an offensive lineman, but like Cleveland, none of the remaining ones should be drafted this highly. Cliff Avril will be gone and Kyle Vanden Bosch is 33. Perry can add depth and rush the passer, and add to an already youthful defensive line.
If any offensive linemen already taken in this mock draft do end up being available to Detroit at this spot, they will almost certainly will grab one.

24. Pittsburgh Steelers - Dontari Poe, DT, Memphis

While other DT's are available, I do not see the Steelers passing on Poe. He is a huge kid weighing in at over 350 pounds. With Casey Hampton aging, Pittsburgh will take Poe here. If not, then Devon Still, Fletcher Cox, and Jerel Worthy are also options. An offensive line pick could be used here too.

25. Denver Broncos - Mark Barron, S, Alabama

Denver is a very old team, especially on the defense. They need many upgrades at position on both sides of the ball. Assuming the offense will have problems, the defense needs to make stops. Champ Bailey can hold down the secondary for a bit longer, but Brian Dawkins is going to retire. Barron could be a top 15 pick, but has a good chance to slide down to the 20's. Denver will take best defensive player available.
They also could take a shot at a running back such as Lamar Miller here, as Willis McGahee's discovery of the fountain of youth last season will not continue.

26. Houston Texans - Devon Still, DT, Penn State

This really is a tough spot to pick for Houston, as all the first round talent in the team's positional needs are taken. The defensive line could use some help on the inside, and Still has great potential. Not a bad pick here as far as value goes. Houston does not want to reach here.
If a secondary player or WR falls to them, Houston most likely will take one. WR is biggest need, as Shaub has no one to throw to aside from Andre Johnson.

27. New England Patriots - Whitney Mercilus, DE, Illinois

Whitney Mercilus
As we all saw, the Patriots need help all across the defense. Aside from Jared Mayo, Vince Wilfork, Brandon Spikes, and Pat Chung, the Patriots defense is very weak. A team with only 4 above average starters on defense will not win any championships, no matter how good their offense is.
Rebuilding this defense will start on the defensive line, and Mercilus is a pass rusher creating buzz so far. The Patriots will most likely take him or Andre Branch at this point in the draft.

28. Green Bay Packers - Alfonzo Dennard, CB, Nebraska

The Packers don't have many needs, but depth in the veteran secondary is the biggest need. Dennard can provide solid depth and keep the Packers from skipping a beat. DE or OLB is also an option here.

29. Baltimore Ravens - Peter Konz, C, Wisconsin

Centers are not really taken in round one, but the Ravens could use depth with Matt Birk most likely retiring or moving on. Even then, Birk is 35. If not Konz, a linebacker is also a possible pick here.

30. San Francisco - Fletcher Cox, DT, Mississippi State

San Francisco will just take the best player available here, and if Cox is still here, the 49ers will take him. Corner is biggest need but none left are worthy of first round pick.

Harrison Smith
31. New England Patriots - Harrison Smith, S, Notre Dame

The Patriots will continue to boost their defense with Harrison Smith. A very smart, but not especially athletic safety but still very effective on the field. Smith has a chance to be a star and can be the next Rodney Harrison for the Patriots.

32. New York Giants - Vontaze Burfict, LB, Arizona State

The defending Super Bowl champs will look to add depth here to make another run at the Super Bowl in 2012-13. A corner also could be taken here, but Burfict can develop into a very strong player, despite character issues.

So to review, here are the first round pick of the first mock draft:

1. IND - Andrew Luck, QB
2. STL- Matt Kalil, OT
3. MIN - Justin Blackmon, WR
4. CLE - Robert Griffin, QB
5. TB - Trent Richardson, RB
6. WAS - Riley Reiff, OT
7. JAX - Kendall Wright, WR
8. MIA - Quinton Coples, DE
9. CAR - Michael Brockers, DT
10. BUF - Morris Claiborne, CB
11. KC - Courtney Upshaw, LB
12. SEA - Melvin Ingram, DE
13. ARI - David DeCastro, OG
14. DAL - Dre Kirkpatrick, CB
15. PHI - Luke Kuechly, LB
16. NYJ - Chandler Jones, DE
17. CIN - Janoris Jenkins, CB
18. SD - Alshon Jeffery, WR
19. CHI - Jonathan Martin, OT
20. TEN - Mike Adams, OT
21.  CIN - Cordy Glenn, OG
22.  CLE - Michael Floyd, WR
23. DET - Nick Perry, DE
24. PIT - Dontari Poe, DT
25. DEN - Mark Barron, S
26. HOU - Devon Still, DT
27. NE - Whitney Mercilus, DE
28. GB - Alfonzo Dennard, CB
29. BAL - Peter Konz, C
30. SF - Fletcher Cox, DT
31. NE - Harrison Smith, S
32. NYG - Vontaze Burfict, LB

Next mock draft should be coming in the next couple months, with round 2 preview too.

Donavan McNabb Waived By Vikings

Donovon McNabb was waived by the Minnesota Vikings Thursday. The 13-year veteran will look to sign somewhere for his third team in the last two seasons.

McNabb was brought into Minnesota to start while rookie Christian Ponder was groomed. But due to very bad play, McNabb was benched in week 6, and Ponder took over. McNabb then asked to be waived, and had his wish granted today.

"This was the best decision for both parties," said Vikings coach Leslie Frazier."He was a great player and has been a great player for our league for a long, long time. Have a lot of affection and love for Donovan."
Donovon McNabb was a Pro Bowl QB in Philadelphia since being drafted 2nd overall out of Syracuse in 1999. He led the Eagles to a Super Bowl in 2004, but lost to New England. After the Super Bowl year, injuries have derailed his career, and led him to where he is today.

McNabb while with the Eagles
After 2009, the Eagles gave the reigns to Kevin Kolb (who lost them later that year to Michael Vick) and McNabb was traded to the Washington Redskins for a second round pick and a conditional 3rd or 4th round one as well. But it was one of the worst seasons in McNabb's career and he was demoted to third string which caused public criticism of coach Mike Shanahan.

He was traded to Minnesota for a 6th round pick before this season, and once again it did not work out and he was benched. Then waived, and we are where we are today.

The Cowboys, Bears, and Texans are all said to be possible landing spots for McNabb.

This appears to be the end of McNabb's career. It will be best for him to retire at season end in my opinion, and make his case for a Hall Of Fame berth. His numbers and career record deserve an entry I think, but the case against him also has its points. But if my vote counted, I would vote McNabb in on his first ballet attempt.

Carson Palmer On Move as NFL Trade Deadline Passes

Mike Brown the owner of the Cincinnati Bengals finally caved in. After saying repeatedly that Carson Palmer will not be traded, other teams still sent offers for the two time Pro Bowl quarterback. Oakland was one of these teams, and when Jason Campbell went down with a season-ending injury last Sunday, the Raiders had a new urgency to grab Palmer, and a deal went through.

Carson Palmer
The Raiders (4-2) have sent a first round pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, and a second round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, that could turn into another first round pick if the team wins a playoff game in 2011. In return Carson Palmer will be suiting up in the Silver and Black and be Oakland's newest starting quarterback.

The only other quarterbacks on Oakland's roster are Kyle Boller and Terrelle Pryor. Boller has not started a game sense he was with Baltimore back in 2007. He has had some starter experience, but not nearly enough for the Raiders to trust him at the reigns. Pryor is a rookie from Ohio State who was suspended the first 5 games and was only reinstated Monday. He is a long term project that may not even play quarterback in the future.

The free agent pool is also quite empty as the best option is David Garrard, but Garrard now needs surgery and will not be able to play for anyone during the 2011 season.

So the Raiders offered a 1st and 2nd rounder for Palmer, and Mike Brown, the owner of the Bengals, accepted. The Raiders play Kansas City this weekend, and after that have a bye. Week 9 the team plays Denver at home, and Palmer is expected to make his debut in that game. Kyle Boller will most likely start the game this Sunday. Palmer has been working with trainer and former NFL QB Ken O'Brian and apparently is in "top shape."

Is this a good move? Yes it is. But maybe not for the price. While I do believe that this move helps the Raiders, and puts them in a better situation then they even were with Campbell, I think they gave up way to much. A first and second round pick that may possibly become another first rounder is just to much for Palmer. The Raiders need to improve all across the board, and giving up two picks that could be used on players that would be the future of the team just for Palmer will be a bad move in my books.

Will Palmer be worth the price?
Unless Palmer gets them playoff wins for years to come, I don't see this being what the Raiders expect. Oakland does not have a solid offensive line and has worse receivers then Cincinnati had. The Raiders have just given up to much here for a player who will not give them what they are hoping for. While Palmer will play well, he will not be worth the picks they gave up.

After this move, the Raiders only have picks in round 5 and 6 of this years draft. The first rounder traded for Palmer, the second rounder to New England for other picks that led to Joe Barksdale and Taiwan Jones. The third round pick was used on Pryor in the supplemental draft, and the fourth was used to trade for Jason Campbell. The seventh round pick was used to acquire linebacker Aaron Curry, a former first round pick, from Seattle. However the Raiders will most likely gain some compensation picks in late rounds after heavy losses in free agency.

This is the kind of move you would expect Al Davis to make, giving up to much for a player not worth the price. Davis is now deceased, but apparently Raiders have not changed.

Oakland was right to make the move for Palmer, but should not have given up as much as they did.

Oakland was not the only team making moves this week, as the Eagles and Lions made a deal to swap running backs. Detroit will receive Ronnie Brown from the Eagles for Jerome Harrison and a 2013 7th round pick.

Jerome Harrison
Detroit needed a back who can run the inside and be a goal line rusher, after the rookie they drafted, Mikel Leshoure was placed on IR in the pre-season. Jerome Harrison does not fit that role, and will head back to the Eagles where he was traded to last year from Cleveland. He will be the backup to LeSean McCoy and could see more playing time then he did last season.

Detroit gets Ronnie Brown who is an inside rusher and is a great pick up for the Lions. They have a more powerful back and can fill in for Jahvid Best any time, and will be a good replacement for Leshoure for the rest of the season.

Overall a fair trade for both teams here. Both improve their running back depth.

Eagles Sign Star CB Nnamdi Asomugha

Nnamdi Asomugha
Star cornerback and the most sought-after free agent Nnamdi Asomugha had many teams, it appeared, in the sweepstakes for his services, and on Friday, the Eagles won by giving Asomugha a 5 year, $60 million deal, with $25 million guaranteed. This, coming the day after the team traded back up QB Kevin Kolb to the Arizona Cardinals for a second round pick, and young but promising corner Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie.

Asomugha is a shut down corner who spent his first eight seasons in Oakland. He was drafted in round one out of Cal by Oakland in 2003. He is a four time pro-bowler, with 11 career interceptions. That number may seem low, but it is because he is such a great defender that teams rarely throw the ball his way. He eliminates whichever receiver he is up against in the passing game. Asomugha is regarded as maybe the best corner in the NFL. He also was the top corner on USA Today's all decade team of 2000-2010.

It looked like at first that Asomugha was headed to New York to play for the Jets. Along with arguably the other best corner, Darrelle Revis, they could have made the best pass defense in NFL history together. But apparently he declined the Jets offer, as well as offers from the 49ers, Bucs, and Texans. Now the Jets must look to re-sign Antonio Cromartie, who may be upset that the team ignored him for Asomugha, and may look to re-sign elsewhere. That leaves former first round pick Kyle Wilson, who is coming off a bad rookie season to start along side Revis.

But in the end, Asomugha signed with a team many people did not know was pursing him, the Philadelphia Eagles, who now pair him up with Rogers-Cromartie and Asante Samuel. That may not be as good as it could have been in New York, but this still makes it the best CB group in the NFL, and has people talking that the Eagles may be the NFC favorite.

Rogers-Cromartie
The Eagles allowed 31 passing touchdowns last year, a franchise worst. But with these additions of Rogers-Cromartie and especially Asomugha, that number should be much lower after this year.

Philadelphia also added underrated DE Jason Babin. And as a replacement for Kolb, QB Vince Young.

Bottom line, the Eagles are in it to win now. And they are sure in the makes of it with these big signings to really strengthen their defense. The offense will be fine once DeShaun Jackson ends his holdout, and once he is back this team looks ready to win the NFC East. I wouldn't say these moves make them the NFC favorite, but it really helps. Michael Vick will need to have a season like last, and the defense must play better. If all that happens, the Eagles are not a team to take lightly at all.

Sidney Rice signs with Seattle Seahawks

The NFL is back, and teams immediately started signing free agents to make up for all the lost time. Today the top WR free agent available signed with the Seattle Seahawks. Sidney Rice, a 2nd round pick in 2007 by the Minnesota Vikings, signed a 5-year, $41 Million deal on Wednesday with Seattle.

Sidney Rice with Vikings
Rice was a standout at South Carolina, and also broke the school record for touchdown receptions in a game with five vs Florida Atlantic in 2006.

After being drafted by the Vikings with the 44th pick in 2007 he was a solid backup as a rookie. In his second year, he became a starter and flourished becoming the Vikings top WR. In 2009 with Brett Favre, Rice had his breakout year where he became one of the top NFC receivers. A hip injury kept him out for most of 2010.

The Seattle Seahawks have been very active thus far, signing OG Robert Gallary, and bringing in Rice's former teammate Tarvaris Jackson at QB. This move is great for Seattle as already they have someone to work with at QB, a solid offensive line if healthy, and a great WR threat who will be the #1 receiver from week one.

Great move here for Seattle and I expect more from them before the season starts. Another QB acquisition could be in the mix for them too, as the rumors of Matt Lienart to Seattle were false and he re-signed with the Houston Texans.

2011 NFL Mock Draft 1.0

April is when the NFL annually holds the draft in New York. So now is the time to make your mock
drafts for this coming up draft. The draft is one of the top things I look forward to each year in all of sports.

Due to the NFL lockout right now, veteran players are telling draft prospects to skip the draft. But for now, we must assume there will be a draft full of all players who entered. And if there is, this is how I see it playing out:

Round 1

1. Carolina Panthers - Cam Newton, QB, Auburn

Cam Newton

While I feel that Jimmy Clausen still should be the starter and have more time to prove himself in Carolina, new coach Ron Rivera does not. The whole Panther fan base and organization does not either. So now that they are going to take a QB it seems, it comes down to Newton or Blaine Gabbert. I feel that Newton is a better QB and athlete then Gabbert so I have Carolina taking Newton #1 overall.
I still feel they should be taking a WR in AJ Green to help Clausen. If Clausen does not work out, then taking a QB such as Andrew Luck or Matt Barkley in the 2012 draft, but it appears that won't be happening and that is why I think that Cam Newton will be the top player selected in the draft. I could see Newton either being a star in this league or the next JaMarcus Russell. Either one would not surprise me. Still, he's a good pick for now.

2. Denver Broncos - Marcell Dareus, DT, Alabama

Marcell Dareus

The Broncos had an NFL worst 23 sacks all of last season. Just 23. While yes Elvis Dumervil was injured, they still need more help. A lot of help at that. It comes down to Nick Fairley out of Auburn or Marcell Dareus of Alabama. The pick goes to Dareus.
Both are spectacular players, but Dareus has outperformed Fairley thus far. Fairley does have the one-up on Dareus as he has had much more time as a starter. Dareus has had just one season. Regardless, I think the Broncos take Dareus, and will be a great pick for years to come.

 3. Buffalo Bills - Blaine Gabbert, QB, Missouri

While Ryan Fitzpatrick has not been bad, the Bills need a QB desperately. Gabbert and Newton are the top two prospects, and I think Bills fans will be happy with Gabbert. After a very impressive pro day at Missouri, Gabbert's stock has risen and he is high on draft boards. Number one on some. But I still say he goes number three and Bills fans can start to look towards the future.

4. Cincinnati Bengals - A.J Green, WR, Georgia

Carson Palmer will not be in a Bengals' uniform next season. Neither will Cedric Benson, Chad Johnson (formally Ochocinco), or Terrell Owens. That means no WR for a new QB to throw too. This draft is loaded with QB talent in later rounds,so Cincinnati will draft a quarterback in a later round. Most likely Christian Ponder out of Florida State. I have heard that the Bengals really like him. However, this is a weak draft at wide receiver. So they should take a WR as soon as possible. With pick number five, they can get the best receiver in this draft, AJ Green. He makes the most sense here. And then Ponder can have someone to throw to.

5. Arizona Cardinals - Von Miller, OLB, Texas A &M
Von Miller

The Cardinals need help on defense. Especially at linebacker. Joey Porter will not be back next season, so this pick is a great one for Arizona. Miller can come in right away and make a big difference. I think Miller will be a special player in the NFL

 6. Cleveland Browns - Nick Fairley, DT, Auburn
People had Fairley going number one to the Panthers when the mock drafts first started. Scense then, he has fallen off many peoples boards, including mine. But I still think he will be a great player in this league. The Browns lost Shaun Rodgers and Fairley will fill that gap perfectly. Great pick here for Cleveland, and Mike Holmgren has this team headed in the right direction.

7. San Francisco 49ers - Patrick Peterson, CB, LSU

San Francisco will really just look to take the best player available here, and who ever it is will be a great player in this league. Especially Peterson. Peterson will help this aging secondary greatly and will give the 49ers a long term solution when Nate Clements is gone. However, keep an eye on them to take a DE.

8. Tennessee Titans - Da'Quan Bowers, DE, Clemson

The Titans need to boost their pass rush and Bowers is the best player available here. When Derrick Morgan is back next year, along with Bowers will form a dangerous, and young pass rush for opposing teams. The Titans also could look to take J.J Watt here too, but I think Bowers is a better player. The only reason Watt should be taken over Bowers is becasue of the knee problems Bowers has had.

9. Dallas Cowboys - Prince Amukamara, CB, Nebraska

The Cowboys desperately needed help in the secondary all of last season. Amukamara is arguably the best corner in this draft and would help the Cowboys greatly. A player that can be the Cowboys' top secondary player for years falls right into their laps at pick #9. Unless Patrick Peterson falls to #9, the Cowboys would be foolish to pass on Amukamara.

10. Washington Redskins - J.J. Watt, DE, Wisconsin

The Redskins had only one player record more then 2.5 sacks last season. Pass rush is a huge priorty to upgrade here for Washington. J.J Watt is a great person for that role. The Redskins would love to have a QB here, but after the first two QB's in the first round are taken, Watt is who they should select.

11. Houston Texans - Robert Quinn, DE, North Carolina

Robert Quinn

Mario Williams has been good, but not as good as we thought. He has been better then Vince Young, Reggie Bush, and Matt Lienart at least. But they still need more help. Behind Bowers, I think Quinn is the best DE in this draft. But Watt fits the Titans style more so he gets drafted higher. All three will be good, and Quinn will help the Texans and boost this defense.

12. Minnesota Vikings - Tyron Smith, OT, USC

The Vikings need help at lots of positions. I think they will address the offensive line in round one and take a solid tackle in Tyron Smith. Smith can help this line with immediate impact. He is big and athletic and can help protect who ever is under center for the Vikings during the next NFL season.

13. Detroit Lions - Aldon Smith, DE, Missouri

The Lions biggest need is a tackle. But the only tackle worthy of a top 20 pick was taken one pick higher. The Lions could trade this pick for a high second round or a lower first round to grab another tackle who is worth a lower pick. But we cannot know for sure.
So if the Lions stay at thirteen, they boost the defensive line even more with a great pass rusher in Aldon Smith out of  the passing-happy conference of the Big 12. Imagine that defensive line if Smith becomes great. Ndamukong Suh and Aldon Smith coming at opposing QB's - that is a scary combination.

14. St. Louis Rams - Corey Liuget, DT, Illinois

The Rams are really on their way to being a force in the NFC. But the defensive line is one thing that needs more work. Liuget has a chance to develop to something great, and right now makes the most sense for this pick right now. But the Rams are the biggest up and coming team in the NFL. Just a few more pieces to the puzzle are needed. Liuget can help finish the puzzle.

15. Miami Dolphins - Mark Ingram, RB, Alabama

The Dolphins' two running backs, Ronnie Brown and Reggie Williams, will be free agents and may not be back. That is why this pick makes sense. A draft weak in running backs, Ingram is the only one guaranteed a first round selection. The Dolphins are rumored to also be looking to upgrade their pass rush. In a draft full of DE's, this would be easy. But I still think they select Ingram.
If they decide to take a DE or DT, then Ingram will most likely go to the Giants at pick nineteen or to the Packers at 32.

16. Jacksonville Jaguars - Julio Jones, WR, Alabama

A lot of people have the Jaguars taking a defensive end at this pick. But Mike Sims-Walker won't be back next year which leaves the wide receiver position very thin. If the Redskins pass on Julio Jones at pick ten, then Jones will for sure fall to the Jags who would be smart to take him. He may not grow into a true number one receiver, but he will be a solid number two and have a long career. A smart pick here and I think this will benefit the Jaguars greatly.

17. New England Patriots (OAK) - Cameron Heyward, DE, Ohio State

Cameron Heyward

Before the college football season started, Cameron Heyward was a top five pick. A disappointing senior season for Ohio State dropped Heyward to round two. But I still think he will be a first round pick after such a dominant performance in the Sugar Bowl win over Arkansas. He is a good pick for New England who will set him up for success in the 3-4 defense.

18. San Diego Chargers - Adrian Clayborn, DE, Iowa

The Chargers also need a young DE for their defense. As do almost all the teams this year it seems. Adrian Clayborn is an underrated player in this draft out of Iowa and I think he will be a solid player in the NFL. But he does seem to  have some character issues.

19. New York Giants - Anthony Castonzo, OT, Boston College
The Giants need help at the offensive line. Castonzo is a great tackle with good athletism and good technique. Giants head coach Tom Coughlin has strong ties to Boston College which could help Castonzo end up in New York.
Cameron Jordan

20. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Cameron Jordan, DE, California

The Buccaneers are a young but good team who need some help rushing the pass. Cameron Jordon is the best pass rusher available at this pick. Makes the most sense.

21. Kansas City Chiefs - Akeem Ayers, OLB, UCLA
The Chiefs, like Tampa Bay, surprised many this past season, but still need help. One of those positions is at OLB. Akyers is a great player who is very versatile and has tremendous coverage skills for a linebacker. His pass rushing needs some work though. Still, a good pick here for KC.

22. Indianapolis Colts - Nate Solder, OT, Colorado

Nate Solder

As we all saw last season, Peyton Manning was batted around and under heavy pressure every game due to a very weak offensive line. The rebuilding starts here, and Solder is the best tackle available. Solder also tore up the combine and his hype is growing.

23. Philadelphia Eagles - Jimmy Smith, CB, Colorado

The Eagles need help in the secondary and on the offensive line. I say that the secondary is what the Eagles address in the first round. Jimmy Smith is the best corner you can get after pick #15. A good pick here for Philly.

24. New Orleans Saints - Phil Taylor, DT, Baylor

New Orleans needs help in the trenches of the defensive line. Shaun Rodgers was brought in, but the 32-year old is not the long term solution. Taylor is. Taylor is a very strong and athletic defensive tackle who will play nose tackle in a 3-4 defense. The Saints have found their long-term answer at DT.

25. Seattle Seahawks - Mike Pouncey, C/OG, Florida

The Seahawks also need help on the offensive line. Just not at the tackle possition like most teams. Pouncey is the best center or guard in this draft, and will most likely be a guard where ever he goes. Brother of rookie standout Maurkice Pouncey in Pittsburgh, Mike Pouncey has great potential. The only reason he is not drafted higher is that no teams really have a demanding need for a guard. The Seahawks are lucky to have him.

26.  Baltimore Ravens - Brandon Harris, CB, Miami (FL)

Brandon Harris

Three of the top four Ravens corners are free agents and will need to be re-signed when the new CBA is worked out. A new corner is needed. Harris is the best available and makes the most sense. Regardless, at the start of next season the Ravens will be very young at corner. A veteran free agent would be a good idea for the Ravens to sign when free agents are available.

  27. Atlanta Falcons - Justin Houston, OLB/DE, Georgia

John Abraham is getting old, and the Falcons had just 31 sacks last season. Help is needed. Houston is a great pass rusher and will help his home state Falcons get to the quarterback.

28. New England Patriots - Gabe Carimi, OT, Wisconsin

While New England's biggest need here is a guard in place of the retired Stephen Neal, I think they will take a tackle instead. There is a good chance that Matt Light will not be back next season, so Carimi is the replacement for him.

29. Chicago Bears - Muhammed Wilkerson, DT, Temple

While Wilkerson may be good, and has his stock on the rise, he is from the small school of Temple. With how deep this draft is at DE and DT, teams may pass on him because they can get a player who went up against much better competition throughout their career. The MAC just isn't the best place to prepare for NFL offensive lines. Still, I think Wilkerson has a good chance to become good in this league, and with Tommie Harris gone, the Bears have found a potential replacement.

30. New York Jets - Ryan Kerrigan, DE, Purdue

The Jets don't have many holes to fill. One that does need some help is the pass rush after Jason Taylor is gone, as well as first round bust Vernon Gholston. Kerrigan can help the Jets get to the quarterback.

31. Pittsburgh Steelers - Marcus Cannon, OG, TCU

The Steelers could use some help up front and Cannon is someone who can start from day one. He had an amazing combine and can help the Steelers perfectly.

32. Green Bay Packers - Ryan Williams, RB, Virginia Tech

The only position the Packers seriously need to look at is receiver, but this is a weak class at WR with the only two with potential already taken. That is why I think Green Bay will take Ryan Williams, the running back out of Virginia Tech. Ryan Grant has not been a great back, neither has Brandon Jackson; Ryan Williams has potential to be a great back, and the Packers should take him with the last pick in the first round.

Bob Sanders Out of Indianapolis

Bob Sanders is done in Indy. Sanders won defensive player in 2007, and when healthy has one of the most dominant players in the NFL. But he has missed way to many games ever since then, and the Colts rightfully didn't feel he was worth the huge amounts.

Indy already is working on signing Peyton Manning, and Marvin Bullitt is worthy of being a starter.

I have the most respect for Sanders, but he needs to stop getting injured. But a team will still take a chance on him. It would be a mistake not too.

Just a small post here. But I needed something to write about, as said by my friend Jake in PE today. My first mock draft will be up soon as well. Follow on Twitter and Like us on Facebook!

NFL Playoff predictions

Well, the Seahawks beat the Rams, and i bit my tongue on the Charlie Whitehurst rip I wrote. But Hasselbeck will be starting in Seattle's playoff game.

These are my playoff predictions for 2011:\

WILD CARD:

Colts over Jets 37-27
Peyton Manning is just too good and will lead Colts over disappointed Jets. Colt's D will also play at a high level.

Ravens over Cheifs 30-16
My original Super Bowl pick will turn it up a notch and win. Chiefs are not ready to win in playoffs. But I'm not sure Cassel can play at this level again next season.

Packers over Eagles 20-17
Michael Vick will keep Eagles in game, but Packers know they are best team in NFC North and will be on a mission not to disappoint this season.

Seahawks WR Ben Obomamu
Seahawks over Saints 24-21
I''m calling it. The 7-9 Seahawks will beat the defending Super Bowl champs. The underdogs will have a sold out crowd, be loud, and the Saints two running backs are out. I like the Seahawks chances here in an upset victory.

Divisional Round:

Colts over Steelers 28-20
Colts find a way to win and Manning shreds Steelers secondary for a big day. Colts advance to AFC Championship.

Patriots LB Jerod Mayo
Patriots over Ravens 38-21
No one is better then Pats right now. Brady and the Pats avenge last years wild card loss with a big step towards another Super Bowl.

Bears over Seahawks 34-17
Even though Seattle won earlier this year, Bears wont let it happen again. Chicago keeps rolling to
second Super Bowl in five years.

Falcons over Packers 30-24 (OT)
This game could go any way, and Packers could very easily win. But Atlanta is determined to win and will in my opinion due to leadership of Ryan. Great game earlier this season, and the second time around will be nothing less. Could be best game of playoffs.

Conference Championships:

Patriots over Colts 36-30
Falcons WR Roddy White
Pats are just so good this year. That's what it comes down to. Manning can't pull the upset and get Colts to Dallas.

Falcons over Bears 17-9

Falcons ready to get to Super Bowl and show they are for real, and will be for the coming years.

Super Bowl XLV

Falcons over Patriots 38-35

Most have Pats winning whole thing and renewing the dynasty. But I say that New England looses in Super Bowl for second straight time. Falcons offense will soar, as will New England's. A shootout in Dallas, and a last seconed field goal (which Pats know all bout in Super Bowls, just not ones by the other tea) will give Atlanta the win. Falcons win first Super Bowl ever.
